One of the things I really enjoy about your pieces is how you place the bands and artists within their geographical context. I’m always extra interested when I see Vancouver or BC mentioned, mainly because it’s the only part of Canada I’ve ever visited. Though I do get the impression that BC hasn’t traditionally been one of Canada’s main music hotspots (yes I know BA comes from Vancouver 😁), at least not when it comes to the styles I tend to follow. Then again, I’m usually looking more toward dance and dance-rock artists and bands.
Thanks Pé! I’d say that Vancouver’s influence has grown over the years, from the 70s or so.
Most artists here had to leave home to find resources and any kind of success because few places had studios, places to play, labels, or even more than one radio station that played music.
The Internet has changed this, obviously. But prior to that you had to go where the infrastructure was.
A few of these are new to me, or at least I saw them and didn't hear them in the day, like JATO. But I remember liking the Mitchell song because I was so dialed into anything Peter Gabriel was doing at the time, even if he thrilled me as much as he frustrated me.
meant to mention the other day, that Neil followed up that album with “Bluenote Café” (2015) a live album from the tour to support the ‘88 album “This Note’s for You”. I was reminded when a song from the live album came on in the shuffle as I’m prepping supper.
Crap. I lied. I have their self-titled album with Baby Ran and I Go Blind, but absolutely love One Day in Your Life!! Wishing it was on that album now lol
I did!! I was surprised to see that they were still releasing new music! I have been listening to new albums every Friday - and their new album was the first I listened to that Friday when they released it.

It’s a lovely collab.
Dug that Neil & the Bluenotes record.
The horns!

Neil sure does like to let his side projects percolate a little, doesn’t he?
That and don’t fence me in. Trans comes to mind
54-40’s One Day in Your Life is soooooo great!! That’s one of the vinyls I kept when I sold off a lot in college!

They had some great tunes! Check out the new record if you get a chance.

Hootie and the Blowfish were paying attention to 54-40. They covered I Go Blind.
They sure did.
Yes! I’ve played the 54-40 version at my vinyl night before- Hootie’s is pretty good
I met jordy birch at a Sugar show in 1993. My only question to him was why didn't you keep After All together.
In retrospect, both bands were more than decent. Anna by Pure remains a favourite.
I really dug Pure at the time. Really sad about Todd.
Man. All of these are new to me. I need to do some streaming this weekend.
You can skip the Myles tune. Maybe find some Pure as a substitute.
Love to see Joni Mitchell here. “My Secret Place” is a fantastic song.
I hadn’t heard it for a long time. So good!
