Great stuff. I remember Bundock and NEOa4 from CFNY and/or MuchMusic, but canβt recall if I knew they were Canadian. Thanks for bringing them back into the light.
Ken, just wanted to add something you might find interesting if you don't know it: Cutting Crew had cancon in the form of guitarist Kevin McMichael. He met fellow Crew member Nick Van Eede when Nick's band, The Drivers (yes, Tears on Your Anorak), were touring Canada. McMichael subsequently played guitar with Robert Plant's band before returning to Canada. Unfortunately, he died of cancer several years back, but I thought you'd appreciate another cancon angle to your post.
We do. I hope this inspires a hidden cancon feature--bands whose lineups included a Canadian or two, like the Pink Fairies. That would be a fun one to do.
Leonard Cohen is the reason, covering the M and L of MAPL. She did Famous Blue Raincoat, which was eight of his songs. It's the same with Bonnie Raitt's Something to Talk about. Music and lyrics by Shirley Eikhard. This is why Bryan Adams got p.o.'d about CanCon. A performance by him of a song written mainly by non-Canadians means he doesn't qualify because he only earns an A. Isn't Canada grand?
OMG Ken, I absolutely adore your deep-cut selections. I found myself jumping to Discogs after almost every track to check whether a twelve-inch version existed π, occupational hazard, Iβm afraid.
Thereβs so much great music to discover from my favorite country on the American continent. Jato is my standout from this selection, and thanks for the warning about BΓΌndockβ¦ not that it helped much, because an earworm is an earworm , and totally inescapable π
Ha - even the not-so-deep cuts are usually unknown gems to those of us "down under." I didn't know any of these four tracks. Of the others at the top, I know the Saga, but it's the period when I didn't follow them, so it's only a vague knowing.
I think this is great. These songs didnβt get as much exposure down here in the US, if any. The only one of these I was at all familiar with was the Saga track. Youβve introduced me to some great music over the last few months. I expect this new series will continue to do that.
This was a lot of fun! Some deep cuts indeed. Tina knew the Body Electric song and was vaguely aware of the Veronique track but didnβt know the first two.
An Alberta band with a song called "Lake Of Fire" π π΅
Going to have to check a bunch of these out and make a playlist.
Oh yeah, thatβs inadvertently funny!

Itβs my pleasure!

Did not know that, Emm. Thanks so much! Pity heβs not with us anymore. π
He was a local legend so when Cutting Crew came out the radio stations here were all over that.
We do love a βlocal boy made goodβ story.

Jennifer Warnes keeps showing up as CanCon in my charts and I need to figure out how she qualifies.

This is a great idea. It'll definitely jog a few memories and introduce us to lesser known artists, hopefully.
I vaguely recall the Bundock track but the rest are new to me.
BΓΌndock blew my mind. My research indicates that, like the Ramones, the boys all took a stage name with the surname.
Love that cover, looks like a blues Anthology release.
Thanks, Frank! I was happy with it. Wanted it to have a bottom of the stack feel.

Yes, the Jato song is an earworm.
Hey Steve, the charts get a lot more interesting near the bottom sometimes.
Saga just keep going, they have so many records! More than 30 now with the last one in 2021. Incredible longevity.

Letβs hope so!

Thanks, Mark! That makes two of us.
Holy crumbles, that Bundock is as if they saw a picture of mariachis and tried to emulate. Awesome!
