That is some blatant Robert Palmer, um, influence/thievery! Crazy. I don't remember this one from the movie. I'm still amazed at how much this steals/borrows from "Addicted to Love."
Melt With You, was on repeat in my Walkman, after I heard it on the Valley Girl soundtrack. But the Pretty In Pink soundtrack was life changing for both my sister and I. We became lifetime fans of every band on there, from Echo and The Bunnumen, New Order, OMD, Psychadelic Furs, itβs a veritable whoβs who of UK New wave and post punk.
What works beautifully here is the sense of how accidental musical history can be. A shelved band, repurposed songs, and then suddenly a placement on one of the most commercially dominant soundtracks of the decadeβthose hinge moments are where careers quietly pivot. You capture that turning point without overexplaining it, which lets the cultural weight of Dirty Dancing do the storytelling.
I also appreciate the focus on textureβthe synth bass, the sax, the vocal sheen. Those details immediately place the listener inside 1987 rather than simply talking about it. Posts like this remind us that memory in music is often cinematic before it is discographicβwe remember the scene, the feeling, the moment on screen, and only then the artistβs name.
This song was new to both of us. There are definitely sections that sound inspired by Peter Gabrielβs Sledgehammer.
I was a huge fan of soundtracks back in the day and probably had at least 50 or 60 in my CD collection. Some of my favorites that come to mind are Tank Girl, Stealing Beauty, Something Wild, Empire Records and Dumb and Dumber.
My favorite OMPS is 'Colors,' I saw the film in a private screening (!) and the rest of the night proved very lucky indeed. Also it has the Coldcut mix of Paid in Full and the Real Roxanne.

Right!? Itβs uncanny.

You may have already, but Grosse Pointe Blankβs soundtrack was put together by Joe Strummer and has a nice mix of UK and US artists.
Oh yes I remember, for music aficionados Grosse Pointe Blank is a wonderfully curated soundtrack. I forgot that Joe Strummer put it together.
Oh yeah, Pretty In Pink was wall to wall great bands!

I'm with Mark on Something Wild. Also liked SFW for that 90's metal.
Thatβs a good one for sure! Iβd say Grosse Pointe Blank is still my fave, I didnβt buy many.

Oh, itβsβ¦ not good.
I hadnβt seen the Tank Girl one, itβs very era appropriate!
It was one of my faves in the mid 90s although I still haven't seen the movie!

I love Paid in Full!
Well, βBatmanβ of course. But I also spent a ton of money and time collecting all the pieces from βFantasiaβ and βClockwork Orangeβ.
Thatβs a diverse selection, Dave!
